According to a tweet from the man himself, he did. The South African-born entrepreneur tweeted around midnight Tuesday that he “just bought Twitter.” Unfortunately for fans, it seems to have been a joke.

Musk tweeted around an hour later that he thinks “it would be pretty cool” if someone bought the platform and deleted it. He followed up with another tweet saying: “Just kidding, who would do something like that?” So what’s this all about? It’s not entirely clear, but it might be a response to Musk’s post earlier on Tuesday saying he has “spoken with Mark about this.”

Mark is Mark Zuckerberg, founder, and CEO of Facebook. The tweet linked to a recent article on Business Insider, which refers to a speech from venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya in which he criticized Zuckerberg and Facebook.

In his speech at Stanford University Graduate School of Business,

Palihapitiya said Zuckerberg was now running Facebook “like an emperor” and has become too powerful. He also said the company had created a “social dilemma,” which is described as “the unintended consequences of technology.”
